“I Will Implement Local Government Autonomy, Ensure Adequate Security For All” – Alli
The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State for the 2027 election, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has pledged to revitalise the state’s education sector, empower local governments, improve security and drive economic growth if elected.
Alli made the pledge on Monday during an interactive session with journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, where he unveiled his vision and priorities for the state.
Describing education as the bedrock of development in the South West, Alli said the region’s founding fathers recognised it as the surest path to prosperity and responsible citizenship.
“Education is our mainstay in the South-West. Our fathers believed that knowledge enhances your ability to earn a decent living and function as a responsible member of society,” he said.
He decried the state of public education in Oyo, blaming overcrowded classrooms, inadequate funding, and the engagement of consultants to manage schools for the decline in standards.
According to him, the consultant model has weakened the education system while encouraging capital flight.
“Schools are being run by consultants, and that has also led to capital flight. These consultants take 10 per cent of all the revenue generated from our students. We will rout them out,” he said.
The APC governorship candidate promised to restore the policy of a maximum of 30 pupils per classroom, rehabilitate school infrastructure, provide instructional materials, ensure regular subventions and running grants for schools, recruit more teachers and improve their welfare.
“In education, we will return to the policy of 30 pupils per class. Today, public schools in Oyo State have up to 120 pupils in a classroom, and that hinders effective learning.
“We will provide free, quality education up to the secondary school level. We will recruit more teachers and improve their welfare. Today, Oyo State is ranked 27th in WAEC performance. We will reverse that,” the lawmaker said.
He also pledged to revive technical education by establishing fully equipped technical colleges across the state within his first two years in office.
On security, Alli linked the rise in kidnapping and other crimes to the weakening of local government administration, saying councils would be empowered to recruit and adequately fund vigilante and neighbourhood watch groups.
He also proposed creating a comprehensive database of all residents to strengthen security and improve government planning.
On the economy, the senator promised to resolve the lingering issues surrounding the Agbowo Shopping Complex and the state’s Free Trade Zone. He also pledged to establish at least one cottage industry in each zone, construct feeder roads to ease the movement of agricultural produce and, in the long term, develop a rail network linking major parts of Oyo State.
Alli further assured residents that local governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) would enjoy full administrative and financial autonomy under his administration.
He disclosed that reconciliatory efforts were ongoing to unite aggrieved APC members, describing party unity as crucial to electoral success.
Alli urged party members to intensify grassroots mobilisation and engagement with voters, expressing confidence that the APC would reclaim Oyo State and deliver people-centred governance.
