Akinfenwa, A Moral Compass, Voice of Integrity – Ogunwunmiju
The Anglican Diocese of Ibadan has rolled out the drums to celebrate its retiring Bishop and Archbishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Olatunji Akinfenwa, describing him as a visionary leader who laid a solid foundation for the church’s growth in Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Iyaganku, Ibadan, the Chancellor of the Diocese, Justice Helen Morenikeji Ogunwunmiju, lauded Akinfenwa’s 26 years of episcopal ministry. She noted that his tenure brought unprecedented administrative excellence, spiritual stability, and institutional development.
Archbishop Akinfenwa, who turns 70 on May 24, 2026, began his episcopal journey as Bishop of Sokoto in 1998 before being transferred to Ibadan in May 2000. He later became the Archbishop of the Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province in 2002.
Justice Ogunwunmiju highlighted the staggering growth recorded under his watch between 2000 and 2026:
Clergy Expansion: The number of clergy members skyrocketed from just 57 in 2000 to over 163.
Grassroots Evangelism: The bishop expanded archdeaconries, created mission fields, and personally trekked to remote villages to establish rural churches.
Mentorship: His leadership nurtured future leaders, producing more than 13 bishops from priests mentored within the diocese.
“Archbishop Akinfenwa is a moral compass and a voice of integrity whose influence extends into national discourse, consistently promoting truth, justice, and peace,” Justice Ogunwunmiju stated.
The Chancellor also praised the bishop’s wife, Mrs. Comfort Akinfenwa, for her impactful work in establishing vocational centres to empower women and youth.
