Women of Fuji Documentary Set for Screening in Ibadan
The second episode of the acclaimed Fuji Documentary series, Women of Fuji, will be screened on June 25 at the North Campus Assembly Hall of The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
Mr Femi B. Adedokun, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Monday.
Adedokun said the documentary was produced and directed by Prof. Saheed Aderinto, a historian and professor of History and African and African Diaspora Studies at Florida International University.
He noted that Aderinto, winner of the 2023 Dan David Prize, brought his academic expertise and cinematic vision to the project aimed at documenting the cultural heritage of Fuji music.
According to him, the documentary series began with its first episode, Mr Fuji, Barry Wonder, which paid tribute to the late Fuji music icon, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister.
He said the film, which premiered in 2024, was screened in cinemas, educational institutions in Nigeria and abroad, as well as on social media platforms.
Adedokun recalled that one of the notable screenings of the first episode took place at The Polytechnic, Ibadan during the tenure of the late Dr Kehinde Faniyi as Dean of the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies.
“The event attracted dignitaries from Ibadan and Oyo State and was both educative and entertaining,” he said.
The dean explained that Women of Fuji, which premiered on March 8 at the J. Randy Event Centre, celebrates the contributions of women to Fuji music.
He said the documentary highlights the role of women as leaders, innovators and cultural voices in a genre traditionally dominated by men.
“The film explores themes of motherhood, love, marriage and gender relations, while showcasing how women have used Fuji music to promote cultural values, challenge societal ills and establish themselves as icons within the tradition,” he said.
Adedokun added that the forthcoming Ibadan screening would be held in honour of the late Dr Kehinde Faniyi.
According to him, the event will be hosted by the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies, with Prof. Taiwo Lasisi, Acting Rector of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, serving as chief host.
He expressed optimism that the screening would attract participants from within and outside Oyo State and provide an engaging cultural experience for attendees.
