FG Mourns Nigerians K!lled in Separate UK, Canada Incidents

The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of two Nigerians who were k!lled in separate violent incidents in the United Kingdom and Canada in the early days of 2026. The reaction was conveyed through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), following confirmation of the incidents by authorities in both countries.  The Commission described the developments as distressing and of serious concern to the Nigerian government and diaspora community.

In a statement issued by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocol Unit at NiDCOM, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the incidents were shocking and deeply troubling. She extended condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and acknowledged the emotional impact of the losses.

According to official reports, John Temitope Onetufo, a 23-year-old Nigerian, was fatally st@bbed on New Year’s Eve in the Lewisham area of London. In Canada, Osemwengie Irorere, a 46-year-old Nigerian, was sh0t and k!lled at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto on Sunday, January 4, 2026. Dabiri-Erewa commended the prompt responses of the UK Metropolitan Police and the Toronto Police Service and urged thorough, transparent, and timely investigations to ensure accountability and justice. She further stated that, “NiDCOM will work closely with the Nigerian High Commissions in the UK and Canada to provide the necessary support to the affected families, in line with the Commission’s mandate.”

 

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to engaging relevant foreign authorities on the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad, while monitoring the progress of investigations through diplomatic channels.
