Makinde Misfired: Why His Attack on Adelabu Reveals Political Anxiety, Not Leadership

Group says governor rattled by PDP defections, APC unity, and Adelabu’s rising acceptance

Awogboro accused Governor Seyi Makinde of selective amnesia, citing his administration’s handling of residents affected by circular road projects in the state.

According to the group, while many circular road victims were left in prolonged hardship and uncertainty, Chief Adebayo Adelabu stepped in with empathy, offering direct support and facilitating financial assistance to ease their suffering.

“Governor Makinde may be angry, but the anger should be directed inward,” the statement said.
“While his administration left many affected citizens with prolonged sorrow and unresolved losses, Chief Adelabu showed practical leadership by helping residents access financial support and regain hope.”

On ‘Capacity’: Group Challenges Makinde to Explain Himself by defining “Capacity”

The group also challenged Governor Makinde to clearly define what he meant by ‘capacity’, insisting that his usage of the term does not align with widely accepted leadership standards.

“From the governor’s comments, it appears he either misunderstands or deliberately distorts the meaning of capacity,” Awogboro said.
“Capacity means experience, competence, tested leadership, institutional management, and proven delivery of results. By every objective benchmark, Chief Adebayo Adelabu qualifies.”

The group urged the governor to come out openly and explain what he considers ‘capacity’, warning that vague accusations without measurable criteria only weaken public discourse and expose political desperation.

2027 Politics, Defections, and APC Unity

Awogboro further stated that Governor Makinde’s remarks appear to be driven by deepening political unease ahead of the 2027 elections, especially following high-profile defections from the PDP.

According to Awogboro , since Senator Hosea Agboola and Professor Raphael Afoja openly dumped the PDP and the Governor Makinde political camp to embrace and support APC / Chief Adebayo Adelabu’s 2027 governorship ambition, the governor has remained unsettled, unhappy, and politically uncomfortable.

“This development has significantly altered the political equation in Oyo State,” Awogboro said.
“The growing acceptance of Adelabu across party lines and the steady erosion of PDP’s internal cohesion have left Governor Makinde politically restless, a situation that explains his recent outbursts and unfounded assertions.”

He added that the APC in Oyo State is no longer divided as it was in 2019 and 2023.

“APC is now more united, better organised, and strategically positioned. The same internal divisions Governor Makinde once exploited are no longer available, and this reality is clearly disturbing to him,” the statement added.

The group also alleged that the governor was displeased that Adelabu emerged as Minister over his preferred nominee, further compounding his frustration.

Call to Oyo Electorate

Adelabu Mandate urged Governor Makinde to focus on governance in the remaining period of his administration, stressing that Oyo APC is steadily positioning itself to reclaim Agodi Government House in 2027.

Awogboro, on behalf of the group, also called on residents of the state to reject recycled promises, assess records critically, and vote massively for APC in the 2027 presidential and governorship elections.
