NDLEA Repatriates 52-Year-Nigerian To Cotonou
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has arrested and repatriated 52-year-old Festus Ibewuike, also known as Chidibest Ibewuike, a suspected drug kingpin who had been on the run for more than two years. Ibewuike was arrested at an airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on September 2, 2026, following intelligence-led operations and collaboration with INTERPOL. He was subsequently handed over to NDLEA operatives and returned to Nigeria.
The suspect had been declared wanted following the interception of 49.70 kilogrammes of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in February 2024. The NDLEA described the seizure as the largest single heroin consignment recorded at the airport. The agency said Ibewuike had relocated to Mozambique, where he allegedly operated a hotel business as a front while moving between Mozambique and Nigeria through Benin Republic to evade arrest.
The investigation also led to the arrest of members of the alleged trafficking syndicate, including Ibewuike’s wife. The NDLEA said 107 bank accounts linked to the syndicate were frozen, while properties allegedly connected to the cartel were forfeited. NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd.) described the arrest as a major breakthrough and reaffirmed the agency’s determination to bring fleeing suspects to justice.
