Imo Government Cracks Down on Illegal Revenue Collection Syndicate in Orji, Owerri
Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) X-Squad, in a coordinated operation involving the Office of the Governor’s Monitoring and Compliance Unit, the Imo State Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), and the Ministry of Transport, have arrested seven individuals for engaging in illegal revenue collection from commercial motorcycle operators in and around Orji, Owerri.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the suspects were caught impersonating authorised government revenue officials, forging official documents, and extorting money from unsuspecting Okada riders under false pretences.
Those arrested include:
1. Mr. Kingsley Nwiwu
2. Mr. Chukwujekwu Ogbunikpa
3. Mr. Emmanuel (also known as “00”)
4. Mr. Chibuzo Ndubueze
5. Mr. Ejike Mbodo
6. Mr. Cyril (surname unknown)
7. Mr. Odinaka Omumuawuike
The suspects are currently in custody at the State Police Headquarters, Owerri, where they are undergoing further investigation.
Hon. Emeka Okoronkwo, Honorable Commissioner at the Ministry of Transport, commended the collaborative effort that led to the arrests, noting that the state government remains committed to stamping out all forms of illegal revenue collection and protecting lawful taxpayers from exploitation.
Authorities have warned that anyone caught engaging in such fraudulent activities will face the full weight of the law.
